Report-card comments that help

Listen to this lesson

Nigerian voice narration

Scenario

Fictional training case. A teacher has 45 pupils' term scores and must write individual, encouraging report-card comments before the deadline. Generic comments ('fair performance, should improve') add no value to parents, but typing 45 original comments by hand is also unrealistic within the time available. Work through the example, identify the evidence needed and practise the method with cleared or synthetic inputs. Any additional figures in the explanation are separate practice examples, not claimed rows in a downloadable file.

Colleagues learning with an AI assistant

Worked example

Create a simple sheet of pupil initials (never full names) alongside their subject scores and trends, and paste this into AI asking for a 2-sentence comment per pupil: one specific strength and one specific area for improvement, tied to the actual scores given. Read through the drafted comments and personalise each one using what you actually know about that child — their effort in class, a specific incident, or a skill not reflected in the numbers — since AI only has the score data, not the full picture of the pupil. Replace any comment that sounds too generic or repeats identical phrasing across multiple pupils, which signals the draft needs more specific input data.

The method

Draft-then-personalise with protected identifiers: use only initials or codes as input so AI drafts a data-grounded two-sentence comment, then layer in the teacher's personal knowledge of the child that the raw score sheet cannot capture.

Worked practice and common mistakes

Marks alone cannot establish a pupil’s effort, personality or home circumstances. Use observed behaviours and fictional codes for practice. A helpful comment connects one documented strength with a manageable next step. Do not invent attendance problems or call a pupil lazy because a mark fell. The teacher’s actual knowledge should guide the final individual comment.

Review before using the result

Check that no two pupils received identical comment wording, and confirm each comment references something specific to that child, not a generic phrase.

Your workplace practice

Use the recommended free assistant with this lesson's fictional example. Ask for the output described in the worked example. Keep a copy of the input and draft. Compare the result with the verification steps above, record any correction, and retain placeholders where evidence is missing. The expected result is a checked draft for human review, not an automatically approved decision. Course examples and practice responses are fictional; amounts, dates, rules and thresholds are not official guidance or supplier quotations.
