Practice questions and marking schemes

Listen to this lesson

Nigerian voice narration

Scenario

Fictional training case. Mid-term tests are due next week and a teacher needs 20 objective questions and 5 theory questions with a complete marking guide across easy, medium and hard difficulty, in WAEC/BECE style. Past experience shows AI-generated maths answer keys sometimes contain calculation errors that would unfairly affect pupils' scores if printed unchecked. Work through the example, identify the evidence needed and practise the method with cleared or synthetic inputs. Any additional figures in the explanation are separate practice examples, not claimed rows in a downloadable file.

Colleagues learning with an AI assistant

Worked example

Ask AI for 20 objective and 5 theory questions explicitly split across easy, medium and hard difficulty, in WAEC/BECE style, each tagged with marks and the correct answer. Before printing, personally solve a sample of at least 5 questions — especially any involving calculation — and compare your answer to the AI-provided key. If a maths question's provided answer doesn't match your working, recheck the question itself for ambiguity (e.g. missing units) and have AI regenerate that specific item rather than trusting the original key. Finalise the marking guide only after this spot-check, then format it for easy use during marking.

The method

Solve-before-trust spot-check: independently work through a sample of generated questions by hand, prioritising any calculation-based items, before accepting the provided answer key as the version to print and use for marking.

Worked practice and common mistakes

Create a blueprint by topic, difficulty and marks before generating questions. Check every final item and answer key, not just the first sample, especially after editing. If two options could be correct, revise the question. A confident key cannot fix ambiguous wording. Confirm that total marks and timing match the intended assessment before printing copies for the class.

Review before using the result

Confirm at least 5 solved sample questions match the AI's answer key, with special attention to any question involving arithmetic, before finalising the test paper.

Your workplace practice

Use the recommended free assistant with this lesson's fictional example. Ask for the output described in the worked example. Keep a copy of the input and draft. Compare the result with the verification steps above, record any correction, and retain placeholders where evidence is missing. The expected result is a checked draft for human review, not an automatically approved decision. Course examples and practice responses are fictional; amounts, dates, rules and thresholds are not official guidance or supplier quotations.
